About the Artwork

“When I first moved to Braemar, a small electrical fire resulted in the cottage being without power for 5 months, spanning the entire winter. At the end of each evening before bed, I would go out to switch the generator off and stand underneath the cold open skies. Silence would return. The fumes would clear and my eyes would slowly adjust. Every night for 5 months I would see shapes of the birch trees and undergrowth revealed by a frozen moonlight. Over time I stopped fearing the darkness that sits at the forest’s edge and began, instead, to cherish it.” – Felix Zandt

About the Artist

Felix Zandt is a rising contemporary talent in Scottish landscape painting. Originally from York and a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, he now works from his studio in the village of Braemar in the Cairngorms National Park, with a particular focus on the local landscape.

Unfolding in a rhythmic language of brushwork and a gradual layering of paint, his works have an immersive, transportive quality that communicates a close intimacy and reverance for the landscape of the Cairngorms - its mountains and woodlands.
