About the Artist

Born in London, Michael Hale studied at Norwich School of Art (1952–56), and the Royal Academy Schools, London (1956–60).

A pioneering screenprinter, Hale worked as a master printing technician at the groundbreaking Kelpra Studio. Hale’s work is largely definable as ‘Hard-Edged Abstraction’, a movement born in the late 1950s in reaction to the wholly emotive Abstract Expressionism, and characterised by crisply de-lineated geometric colour fields – much cooler and stylised in tone.
