Matthew Storstein

Matthew Storstein lives and works in the rural Scottish town of Aberfeldy. A graduate of Glasgow School of Art in 1996, Matthew is a well-regarded painter in Scotland. Approaching painting as a journey of discovery, his creative process unfolds as he works.

“It is typically a very long process that starts with abstract forms from which images appear, discovered rather than intended from the outset. I play with the materials and see what may emerge.”

Figures and landscapes often emerge from abstract forms - shapes, colours and surfaces.

“I want paintings to be like songs - things that go out into the world that people have a relationship with. It becomes about them and the painting… the paintings are places for people to have their own experiences.”
